In 1917, the firm of Bakewell & Brown, with famed Hillsborough architect Arthur Brown Jr. at the helm, created Danvers House for the Van Antwerp Family. Unapologetically European in every detail, the composition took the English Country Manor to new bespoke heights. The floorplan captured a magical entertaining era when massive pipe organs were integrated into walls, and minstrel balconies were ready for a string section 25 feet overhead. And of course, a grand ballroom was de rigeur, complete with 15 foot ceilings and panoramic garden views. This sub-district of Lower North Hillsborough we now refer to as "Fagan Estates" was actually named for the second owners of Danvers House, Paul Fagan and family. From 1917 into the 1920s this area was a lightly populated bucolic expanse in Hillsborough's northwest quadrant, tucked quietly just behind the suburban sprawl that was emerging in Burlingame's Easton Addition.
Now on the market for the first time since the 1970s, today's Fagan Estate has been subdivided into 2 parcels by the current owners. Parcel A hosts the main home on approx. 2.18 acres, with adjacent Parcel B defined as approx. .90 Acre. The home and Parcel A are offered at $11,500,000, with Parcel B available at additional cost or with the ability to be purchased separately. While still arresting in detail, the interiors are now in dramatic need of a next-generation renovation. The home spans some 13,000 sq. ft. of living. Interestingly, there is not currently a garage, as the first carriage house was originally located next door at 55 Fagan. I had sold that home in 2012, representing the sellers. It had been transformed from its chaffeur's roots into an eclectic family home by famed designer John Wheatman. In the realm of Hillsborough's vintage mansions on acreage, recent sales comps are posted at 101 Robin Road ($13,500,000 May 2021), 3080 Ralston ($16,400,000 2021), and 190 Bridge ($16,225,000 2020).
